2 Minute Devotional, Confidence in Listening to God’s Voice – September 22nd

Numbers 12:4–8,

At once Yahweh said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, “Come out to the tent of meeting, all three of you.” So the three of them went out. Then Yahweh came down in a pillar of cloud; he stood at the entrance to the tent and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them stepped forward, he said, “Listen to my words:

“When there is a prophet among you,

    I, Yahweh, reveal myself to them in visions,

    I speak to them in dreams.

  But this is not true of my servant Moses;

    he is faithful in all my house.

  With him I speak face to face,

    clearly and not in riddles;

    he sees the form of Yahweh.

Why then were you not afraid

    to speak against my servant Moses?”

One of the most difficult parts of life with God in this world can be listening to his voice clearly. Or perhaps that is better reworded as…one of the most difficult parts of life with God can be having confidence in the voice we are hearing is truly God’s voice and not our own, or Satan’s words thrown into our mind. Confidence I think is the deal maker. If we know we are hearing from God, it changes everything. It will rock your world. And by know, I mean it’s as real to you as the pizza you had for lunch. God himself is speaking lovingly in relationship to you. When you really take that on, it rocks your world.

God speaks to us in many ways. The most important way he speaks to me is literally talking to me throughout the day and I talk in my mind and heart and spirit back to him. It’s that whisper that Elijah was waiting for on the mountain. We know our Shepherd’s voice. It’s overcoming the fear that maybe we are diluting his voice with our own thoughts that can decrease my confidence. But this is where our faith comes into play and willingness to put aside our own wants and needs to listen to him. We must have faith that we can hear God’s voice, listen to him, engage him in relationship and worship, and live our lives daily with him. We have his Spirit inside us, our bodies are his temple, we can be confident he will speak to us face to face because our very hearts are his holy of holies, that’s how much he loves you and wants his Spirit to be one with yours, made possible through the cross.

I think a great way to start off the day is by listening in to him. Simply saying, Good morning in Jesus. I love you. What do you want to tell me today? Listen to his voice, let the words from his lips lift you up into your day. It’s the best way to to wake up. And then continue listening throughout the day because being close to his voice is wonderful at 10am, at 1:35pm, at 1:55pm, on snack breaks and coffee breaks, on the commute there and the drive home, he wants to talk to you, to us, we just need to be confident in hearing his voice, in addition to choosing to engage him and worship him throughout our day.

Also, God can speak to us in dreams as well. So be prepared to always listen to his voice, even in the middle of the night.

Ok, a personal note…since I started doing the daily devos, I never have time to write a regular post and I miss sharing things about my life on here. Sooo, I kinda want to take a minute to talk about two things in my life. The first is a request…please be in prayer for me and my wife’s new small group we are leading! We have 4 families confirmed to come Friday night and we’re super excited! We are going to start with the Crazy Love workbook by Francis Chan. Several of the families are life long friends that are just coming back to Christ, or we haven’t connected with them in Jesus yet and so we really excited for it!

The second is my hobby, coffee roasting! Yum! I roasted two batches tonight, Ethiopia Gedeo Zone Gedeb Asasa – which is literally a shown stopper coffee – and Kenya Muranga’a Githiga AA.

The Ethiopia (on the right) has notes of floral jasmine, turbinado sugar, sweet lime, graham cracker crust, and rangy citrus. Wow. The Kenya (on the left)  has tasting notes of date sugar sweetness, manho, blood orange, and passion fruit. Soooo good!!

Hope you have a wonderful day today with Jesus!! You are AMAZING in his eyes!! Don’t forget that, even for a moment!! 🙂

  1. so cool about your small group!
    Lord Jesus, bless this group. May you be lifted high and glorified. May each one there grow with the knowledge that is in Jesus and may the fellowship be more unified than ever because of YOU Lord. Let eyes see, ears hear, and hearts open to your word. In Jesus name AMEN!

  2. Lovely post Joel, the Lord has been speaking to me distinctly in 2 ways lately. He wakes me up at crazy early morning hours to talk and I’ve had several dreams over the last couple months. I love that He uses so many ways to speak to us. I’m in awe of how much He pursues our every moment of everyday just to say the littlest of things. He’s so amazing!!
    Isn’t coffee roasting so much fun! I drive my hubby crazy with all the coffee I buy lol

    1. Oh thank you so much for that Lee!! 🙂 you made me smile! I think it’s super sweet of God to want to talk in the middle of the night. I love it. I’ve had several dreams myself.

      Haha! I’m in the same boat, my wife is sweet about it, but I know what you’re talking about. What have you roasted lately?

  3. You’re very welcome! I can see God uses you in so many ways just reading your blog each day. May I suggest that you write 2 each day? One for your devotion and the other for your personal?
    And I forgot to say congratulations on your small group, that is wonderful that you have those commitments to join your group! Praise God!
    I got a shipment of Ethiopian Sidamo Yirgacheffe, I’ve been roasting that the last couple days

    1. Aw thank you so much 🙂 that was too kind! I’d love to write 2 a day Lee, but I’m stretched a little thin on time to do another daily. I’ve still taking my Greek class, but just time with my family and I’m learning a new programming language for work. I’m a busy bee lately!! And yes, I’m so excited that we have the commitments that we got! Can’t wait to see what God does tomorrow night! Praise Jesus!

      Oooh, Yirgacheffe! I’m roasting Ethiopia Gedeo Zone, which Yirgacheffe is inside the Gedeo Zone, so it’s probably grown nearby to what you have. I bet yours is fantastic! What roast are you doing it at? Lighter roast like City/City+ or are you going for a deeper roast like Vienna or French? I’ve been doing a City+ roast on my Kenya and Ethiopian and it’s really been tasty! 🙂

  4. Great post…..Its so good when we can hear God speak through His Holy Spirit. When we know God, which comes from reading the Bible, we will recognize His voice, which comes as a whisper, way beyond the roar of the enemy. Most people, especially unbelievers will hear the roar of the enemy, and mistake it for that of the Holy Spirit. I’m so glad that you also have that faith to know that you can commune with God every minute of the day…..May you be blessed with your small group.

    1. Thank you so much! And amen, when Elijah was on the mountain, he didn’t step out of the cave to hear God’s whisper until after the roaring of the fire, windstorm and earthquake were over. He knew his Shepherds voice was soft and gentle, not roaring like the world or Satan (not that the Lion of Judah can’t roar when he wants too!!), but we know his voice.

      Thank you for the encouragement for our small group!! God bless you!!

      1. Oh yeah!! We’ll all hear him roar then! I’m glad he won’t be roaring at me…what a terrible thing to fall into the hands of God during his rage. But blessed be our Jesus for saving us!!
